Thoughts and opinions concerning the methods of resistance to the invaders / occupiers: September 2015

From August 31 to September 13, 2015 the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted All–Ukrainian poll by order of public organization «Center of strategic research» and «Agency of non-violent solutions»

By telephone interview using computer technology (CATI) random sample with quota selection at the last stage representative of the population of Ukraine, at the age of 18 years and older 1000 respondents were interviewed. The survey was conducted in all regions of Ukraine (except Crimea), including Donetsk and Lugansk regions which temporarily are not controlled by the authorities of Ukraine.

The statistical error of selection (with probability 0.95 and design effect – 1.1). There is also a systematic error except statistical error due to the using landline phones for the survey which has less than half of the population that could add to error about 2 %. The total error of the survey with probability 0.95 does not exceed 5.4 %.

The perception of the annexation of Crimea by Russia and events in the Donbas.

To the question «Do you agree or disagree with the statement that the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014 is occupation?» 77, 5% of respondents agreed with this statement, 10, 8% – disagreed and 11, 7% were not sure with their opinion or refused to answer.

Also the question «What point of you is closer to you?»  about the events in Donbas 79, 8% of respondents chose the option that «Russia's actions in the Donbas is actually a military intervention – armed intervention in the internal affairs of Ukraine», 7% chose the option «Russia's actions in the Donbas is  supporting of the people of this region in their struggle for independence».  Another 13.2% of respondents were not sure with their opinion or refused to answer.

What actions are preferable by Ukrainian population in case of foreign military intervention / occupation?

To the question «What action would you prefer in the case of foreign armed intervention in your city or village?» the respondents' answers were distributed as follows:

  • 23, 8% – chose the option to put up armed resistance,

  • 28, 6% – to resist by participating in acts of civil resistance such as demonstrations, protests, marches, boycotts, strikes, civil disobedience,

  • 11% – to go to a safer region of Ukraine,

  • 3, 2% – to go abroad,

  • 13, 1% – to do nothing,

  • 18, 4% are undecided with their opinion,

  • 1, 9% refused to answer.
