Socio-political situation in Ukraine: May, 2016

On 13th – 18th of May, 2016 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted all-Ukrainian public opinion poll on the client`s request about the recent actions of the President: the appointment of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine, situation around the "offshore scandal", and leadership in the ranking at the moment. There were 2039 respondents living in 110 settlements of all regions of Ukraine (except for AR of Crimea) who were personally interviewed. Sample was stochastic and 4-staged with quota selection on the last stage, sample is representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

Ó In Luhansk and Donetsk regions poll was conducted only on the territories that are controlled by Ukrainian government.

Statistical sample error (with probability 0.95 and design-effect of 1.5) does not exceed: 3.3% for indicators close to 50%, 2.8% - for indicators close to 25%, 2.0% - for indicators close to 10%, 1.4% - for indicators close to 5%.



Presentation

Main results:

  • About two-thirds of the population of Ukraine have negative attitude to the appointment of Y.Lutsenko as a General Prosecutor.
  • If elections of the President of Ukraine had been held in the second half of May, Y.Tymoshenko would have received the majority of voices.

 

People`s thoughts about the recent actions of the President

  • During the interview respondents were asked the following question:

“I will read you the functions that, according to some experts and ordinary people, the President and the Government are currently performing. In your opinion, which of these functions is the major one the President and the Government are performing these days?”

 Answers distributed as follows:

  • 3.9% chose «defend interests of ordinary citizens»;
  • 8.4% — defend national interests;
  • 78.5% — provide conditions for the enrichment of the oligarchs and those in power,
  • 9.1% — did not choose anything or have not decided yet what to choose.
