Electoral intentions of the Ukrainians, April 2014

Ukrainian NGO "Komitet vybortsiv Ukrainy" (Committee of Voters of Ukraine) presents the results of nationwide survey "Ukraine. Presidential elections - 2014, April" conducted by four sociological companies:

  • Centre for Social and Marketing Research "SOCIS";
  • Kyiv International Institute of Sociology;
  • Sociological Group "Rating";
  • Razumkov Centre.

Audience: population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

Sample: representative, a quota sample of 6200 respondents (1550 respondents for each sociological organization) in all regions of Ukraine (excluding the population of Crimea).

Method: Personal interviews formalized according to the questionnaire (face to face), held at the residence of respondent.

Statistical sample error (confidence interval): does not exceed 0.8%

The period of study (field work): April 9 – 16, 2014.


 

Electoral intentions of the Ukrainians

Currently Ukrainians show very high level of electoral activity: about 85% of voters are willing or mostly willing to participate in the vote, 11%  are of the opposite opinion.

In the presidential election to be held on May 25, 2014, 32.9% of respondents are ready to support Petro Poroshenko. The second position is occupied by Y. Tymoshenko - 9.5%, and the third – by S.Tigipko (5.1%). Mikhail Dobkin is supported by 4.2% of voters; 4% would vote for CPU leader Petro Symonenko. About 22% of voters said they did not know whom to vote or they would not come to the polls and 9% said they would vote "against all" candidates.

Among those, who intends to go to the polls and decided about his choice, first five candidates in the presidential race look like this: first place is occupied by P.Poroshenko - 48.4%, the second place belongs to Y.Tymoshenko, who would receive 14% of votes, the third place belongs to S.Tigipko - 7.4%. M.Dobkin and P.Symonenko, in this case, would receive 6% and 5.6% respectively

During the survey, respondents were asked to make their own prediction about who will be the next president of Ukraine; they were asked the following question: "Tell me please, no matter whom from the candidates you support, who, do you think, will win the election and become the future President of Ukraine?"

Respondents believe that, the most likely, P. Poroshenko will win in the presidential election - 38.7%. The victory of Y.Tymoshenko is predicted by 8.6% of respondents, and the victory of S.Tigipko – by 2.5%. Only 1.9% of respondents believe in the win of M.Dobkin. Less than half - 44.3% of all respondents - refused to make a prediction.

Thus, at present, it can be said with confidence that P. Poroshenko will participate in the second round. The most likely candidates to oppose him in the second round are, first of all, Tymoshenko and also Tihipko and M.Dobkin.

Respondents expressed their opinion on other issues as well: 37.3% of them support the status of Ukrainian language as the only state language, but think that Russian language can be official. Giving to the Russian language the official status in some regions of Ukraine (while Ukrainian language remains the only state language) is supported by 31.7% and 28.9% believe that both Ukrainian and Russian languages should be state in Ukraine.

The vast majority of the Ukrainian supports the current unitary form of the government of Ukraine. The opposite view (federal form of the government) is supported by 18.7%.

The majority of respondents - 59.4% - would like the relations between Ukraine and Russia to be friendly, with open borders, no visas and no customs, while remaining independent states. 30.8% of respondents believe that the relationship should be like with other states - with closed borders, visas and customs. Unification of Ukraine and Russia in one state is supported by  4.8% of the Ukrainians.

The language situation is currently debated in Ukraine. What status should Ukrainian and Russian languages have in Ukraine, in your opinion? %
