Stressful situations in lives of Ukrainians, 2015

In a period of December 2-11, 2015 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology has conducted own public opinion poll. Data were collected from 2022 respondents aged 18 and above, living in all regions of Ukraine (including Kyiv) except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. In Luhansk region survey was conducted only on the territories controlled by Ukraine. Survey was conducted both on territories that are and that are not controlled by Ukraine in Donetsk region. Sample is representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 years and above.

The statistical sample error (with probability of 0.95 and design–effect of 1.5) does not exceed: 3.5% for indicators close to 50%, 2,8% – for indicators close to 25%, 2,0% – for indicators close to 10%, 1.4%  – for indicators close to 5%.

 

Changes that have happen with stresses in the lives of Ukrainians over the past year are the topic of this press-release.

According to the latest KIIS survey 64% of participants have been going through some stressful situation in the last year. This percentage is not much bigger than it was in 2014 (62%) but it has grown significantly comparing to 2013 (49%). Also growth was observed in the amount of people who were through the serious illness of a significant other (from 9,9% in 2014 to 14,3% in 2015), and people who suffered serious illness and had surgery (from 7,2% in 2014 to 11,3% in 2015). Amount of those people who were in situations of shelling and bombing decreased in 2015 (from 7% in 2014 to 6%) although difference is not very significant.

Stressful situations that Ukrainians have been suffering from in 2015 most often are:

  • Serious illness of a loved one  – 14% of participants

  • Feeling of own helplessness – 13%

  • Serious illness and surgery – 11%

  • Job loss – 9%

  • Death of a loved one  – 9%

  • Loss of faith in people – 9 %

  • Loss of belief in myself – 7%

  • Found myself left without livelihoods – 7%

  • Shelling and bombing – 6%

 

By gender:

  • In general, women experienced bigger amount of stressful situations than men did:  68% of women and 59% of men were in stressful situations in 2015. Percentages of those who were through the illness of a significant other, feeling of own helpless, serious illness and surgery, death of a loved one, loss of faith in people, and loss of belief in themselves were bigger amongst women (17%, 16%, 13%, 12%, 10%, and 8% respectively) than amongst men (11%, 9%, 9%, 6%, 7%, and 5% respectively).

  • At the same time, amount of those who lost the job is bigger amongst men (12%) than amongst women (7%).


By age
:

  • Older people suffer from serious illness of a significant other (60-69 years old – 20%, 70+ - 23%), serious illness and surgery (60-69 years old – 20%, 70+ - 26%), and feeling of own helplessness (60-60 years old – 18%, 70+ - 22%) more often.


By region
:

  • Eastern region (74%) suffered from stressful situations significantly more than others, second place goes to Western region (67%), South and Central regions have same percentage – 59%.

  • Top positions in the list of stressors in Eastern region are occupied by shelling and bombing (27%), and feeling of own helplessness (17%).

  • In Western region there are 13% of people who felt themselves helpless, in Southern region - 12%, in Central region - 10%.

  • The percentage of those who lost belief in themselves also is higher in Eastern region (14%); it is 7% in Western region, 5% in Central region, and 3% in South region.

  • Western region is leading in the amount of those who suffered from the death of a loved one (12,7% of participants). In Eastern region this percentage is 5%, in South region – 11%, in Central region – 8%.

  • Amount of those who lost job is also bigger in Western region – 12% of participants. In Eastern region job loss was a stressor for 9% of people, in South region – for 9%, in Central region – for 8%.

  • 12% of participants in Western and Eastern regions stated they had lost faith in people and faced villainy; it was a cause of stress for 5% of people in South region, and for 6% in Central region.

  • Percentage of those who found themselves left without livelihoods is much higher in Eastern region (12%)than in Southern (7%), Western (5%),and Central (4%)regions.
