Euro 2012: who are the referees?

The last chords of the group stage of Euro 2012 have left the air. This stage has brought many surprises, joys and disappointments. Our national team, having lost 1-0 in the game against British national team, finished its performance at this stage of the tournament. The same sitation is with the Polish national team. But this game has left many questions.

Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) is traditionally interested in thought of football fans of its online panel InPoll. This time KIIS learned about impression that was made by our national team performance and whom our fans will be cheering for. In total, the survey involved 350 Ukrainian fans.

Despite the defeat of our national team, fans consider its performance against England to be match quite good (86% of respondents agree with the above). 8% of respondents think that the performance was satisfactory; and 6% think it was totally bad.

Among the main reasons of unsuccessful performance of the Ukrainian national team is mostly mentioned judicial mistakes and weak realization of chances.

What are the comments of fans on the situation? We analyzed in details the comments and identified the most common explanations and quotes:

  • Psychological causes of the defeat

"The goal that was not scored essentially stopped the courage and had a huge impact on the following team perfomance"

"The team was not psychologically prepared for the game with such opponents like England"

 

  • Weakness in attacking

"The team was good, but it does not have enough good forwards that could score"

"Ukraine without Andriy Shevchenko is like game without the ball!"

"For the world-class teams it is enough to have one chance to score to win. Devich had to be more precise when hitting the gate!"

"Team was to attack from the very start of the game"

"Attacking players do not have enough attack skills: 16 strikes and only 5 were gate aimed! England has also same 5 gate aimed strikes, but out of 9!"
  • Lack of teamwork among players

"Lack of teamwork among players in the defence line"

"A lot of unsuccessful passes"

"Standards should be automatic. We should learn."
  • Low dedication to the game

"Team players team moved poorly and did not make the episodes complete"

"They need to play but not to show their possibilities"

"They did not open themselves to receive the pass and did not fight for the ball"

It is interesting, that in spite of everything, the performance of the Ukrainian national team against England was evaluated as one of the best games of the last round. And national team of Sweden took all the prizes of fans in the final round, which performance is considered to be the best:

But whom will fans support during the play-offs? The first three teams who will be supported by Ukrainian fans includes Germany (28%), Spain (20%) and Portugal (14%).
