Attitude of the Ukrainians toward national holidays

The research showed that, in general, the Ukrainians treat holidays with love and respect, only 2% of respondents do not treat any of the holidays as important and favorite.

OnFebruary 5-16, 2016 KyivInternationalInstituteofSociologyconducted own public opinion poll.

Sample consisted of 2020 respondents who live in all regions of Ukraine (including Kyiv) and in Crimea, and were surveyed through personal interviews. Sample is stochastic and representative for population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

Statistical sample error (with probability 0.95 and design-effect 1.5) does not exceed:

3.3% for indicators close to 50%,

2.8% for indicators close to 25%,

2.0% for indicators close to 10%,

1.4% for indicators close to 5%.

 

The most favorite national holidays amongst the Ukrainians are:

 

  • Easter (Velykden`)– 81%

  • Christmas (Rizdvo Chrystove)78%

  • New Year (Novyi rik) – 74%

  • International Women`s Day (Mizhnarodnyi zhinochyi den`)37%

  • Victory Day (Den` Peremohy) 35%

  • Trinity (Triitsia) – 34%

  • Independence Day of Ukraine (Den` Nezalezhnosti Ukrainy) – 20%

 

The least popular holidays amongst the Ukrainians are International Workers` Day (Den` mizhnarodnoi solidarnosti trudiaschyh) – 7%, and Day of the Constitution (Den` Constytutsii) – 5%.

Comparing to 2013 there is a decrease in amount of those who choose Victory Day (from 40 to 35%), New year (from 82 to 74%), International Women`s Day (from 49 to 37%), and International Workers` Day (from 10 to 7%) as favorite holidays.

Independence Day of Ukraine was amongst the least popular holidays until 2014, now its popularity is by 8 percentage points higher than it was in 2013 (20% comparing to 12%).

Moreover:
  • Women respect religious holidays and InternationalWomen`sDay more than men do. Christmas is loved and respected by 81% of women and 76% of men, International Women`s Day – by 46% of women and 26% of men, Easter – by 84% of women and 77% of men, Trinity – by 38% of women and 30% of men.

  • Men love and respect Victory Day (37% of men vs 33% of women), and Independence Day of Ukraine (25% vs 16%) more than women do.

  • Religious holidays are the most popular amongst people with elementary education (less than 7 years of studying): Easter – 93%, Christmas – 93%, Trinity – 60%. New Year is slightly more popular amongst people with incomplete higher education (83%), and with higher education (80%), and slightly less popular amongst people with incomplete secondary education (55%). International Women`s Day is very popular amongst people with higher education (48%), and is the least popular amongst people with incomplete secondary education (21%). Victory Day is more loved by people with incomplete secondary education (45%). Independence Day of Ukraine is the most popular amongst people with incomplete higher education (27%) and with higher education (26%), it is the least popular amongst people with elementary and incomplete secondary education (3% and 4%, respectively).

 

By regional distribution:

  • The biggest amount of those who respect religious holidays is concentrated in the Western region (Christmas – 89%, Easter – 90%, Trinity – 55%), the smallest amount of them is in the Eastern region (Christmas – 72%, Easter – 74%, Trinity – 23%). In the South region they are – 75%, 78%, 24%, respectively; in the Central region – 76%, 82%, 32%, respectively.

  • New Year is the most popular holiday in the South (86%) and the Eastern (86%) regions, it is the least popular in the Western region (56%). In the Central region this holiday scored 71%.

  • International Women`s Day is the least popular amongst the residents of the Western region (26%), it is the most popular in the South region (44%). Both in the Central and in the Eastern region it scores 33%.

  • Victory Dayis loved and respected the most in the Eastern region (58%), the least – in the Western region (16%). It is considered to be important by 30% of the respondents in the Central region and by 39% of the respondents in the South region.

  • Independence Day of Ukraine is respected the most by the residents of the South (28%) and of the Western (27%) regions, the least – in the Eastern region (8%). In the Central region this holiday is respected by 17% of the respondents.
