What presents do the Ukrainians expect for the New Year holidays (December 2016)

In a period of December 3-12 of 2016, Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) has conducted its own public opinion poll. Data were collected from 2040 respondents living in 110 settlements (PSU) in all regions of Ukraine (except for AR of Crimea) with the method of personal interviewing. The sample was stochastic and 4-staged with quota selection on the last stage, the sample is representative of the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

In Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts (regions) survey was conducted only in the territories that are controlled by the Ukrainian government.

The statistical sample error (with a probability of 0.95 and at design–effect of 1.5) does not exceed:

3.5% for indicators that are close to 50%,

2.8% – for indicators that are close to 25%,

2.0% – for indicators that are close to 10%,

1.4%  – for indicators that are close to 5%.

Over the past few years on New Year holidays` eve KIIS conducts the survey to find out what presents are popular amongst Ukrainians and, hopefully, simplifies the process of choosing gifts for family and friends.

According to the results, top 6 presents the Ukrainians want to receive are money, romantic journey, household appliances, automobile and accessories to it, sweets and flowers,  jewelry.

 

  • First place in the rating of New Year's gifts as a year ago is occupied by money. 21% of men would like to get money as a gift for the New Year (in 2015 it was 13%), among women this percentage is 17% (in 2015 it was 15%). In the second place in the hierarchy of gifts for men are a romantic journey and the car with accessories to it – equally 10% (in 2015 13% wanted a car and accessories, and only 6% wanted a romantic journey). As to the second place, women are in solidarity with men regarding a romantic journey (11%), while only 3% of women want a car and accessories to it (although in 2015 it was even smaller partition - 1%).

  • In the third place this year for men and women are household appliances - equally 8%. In 2015, 5% of men and 6% of women have chosen such a gift.

  • 7% of men do not expect any present for the New Year, so are 13% of women that is much bigger percentage than it was in 2015 (4%).

  • However, in 2016 the percentage of those who do not receive any present for the New Year became smaller – 6% for men (was 10% in 2015), 4% for women (was 8% in 2015).

  • By age: almost the same amount of representatives of almost all age groups want to get money as a present. The age group 50-59 years want it some more (22%, was 15% in 2015) as well as the representatives of the age group 70+ (23%). The number of those who do not receive presents increases directly proportional to age: 18-29 years - 1% 70+ - 12% (very pleased that this number decreased significantly during the year - in 2015 it was 21%).
