Stressful situations in the lives of the Ukrainians, 2016

In a period of December 3-12 of 2016, Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) has conducted its own public opinion poll. Data were collected from 2040 respondents living in 110 settlements (PSU) in all regions of Ukraine (except for AR of Crimea) with the method of personal interviewing. The sample was stochastic and 4-staged with quota selection on the last stage, the sample is representative of the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

In Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts (regions) survey was conducted only in the territories that are controlled by the Ukrainian government. In this survey, the sample covered only the controlled part of Donbas in the same proportion as it was registered for Donbas voters in the last parliamentary elections (October 2014) according to the data of CEC.

The statistical sample error (with a probability of 0.95 and design–effect of 1.5) does not exceed 3.3% for indicators close to 50%, 2.8% – for indicators close to 25%, 2.0% – for indicators close to 10%, 1.4% – for indicators close to 5%.

The following press release is about changes that have occurred with the situation with stresses in the lives of the Ukrainians over the past 2 years.

According to the latest KIIS survey, 58% of participants experienced some stressful situation during the last year. Compared to the data of 2015 this percentage decreased by 5 percentage points (it was 64% last year), while the percentages of those who lost the belief in people, and of those who found themselves left with no livelihood slightly increased. The amount of those who became jobless decreased.

The amount of those who did not experience any stressful situation increased by 3 percentage points (from 34% in 2015 to 37% in 2016).

The most often experienced by the Ukrainians kinds of stressful situations in 2016 include:

  • Loss of belief in people, facing the meanness – 14% (was 9% in 2015)

  • Serious illness of a significant other – 13% (was 14% in 2015)

  • Feeling of own helplessness – 13%, the same percentage as in 2015

  • Serious illness and surgery – 11%, the same was in 2015

  • Left with no livelihood – more than 9% of respondents (was 6% in 2015), while the percentage of those who became jobless, vice versa, decreased – 6% (was 9% in 2015)

  • Death of a significant other – 9%, the same percentage as in 2015.

  • Loss of belief in self – 8% (was almost the same in 2015 – 7%)

By gender:

  • In general, women experienced more stressful situations than men did:  60% of women and 55% of men experienced stressful situations in 2015. Percentages of those who were through the surgery and illness of a significant other are bigger among women (15%) than among men (11%). The difference by gender is even bigger in the case of the feeling of own helplessness – 15% among women, 9% among men.

  • The percentage of those who lost the job is twice bigger among men than among women (8% and 4%, respectively).

This may be due to the fact that women live longer: aged people experience more stress in Ukraine. Proof of this is in the next distribution.

By age:

  • People of the age group 60+ suffer from a number of situations more often than other age groups (see the Addition), they are: serious illness and surgery (24%), serious illness and surgery of a significant other (18%), death of a significant other (15%), feeling of own helplessness (20%), left with no livelihood (10%).
