Dynamics of support ratings for political leaders and parties compared to the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2019

The press-release was prepared by Anton Grushetsky, Deputy Director of KIIS

On February 8-18, 2020, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted its own All-Ukrainian public opinion poll. The survey was conducted in 110 settlements (PSUs) in all regions of Ukraine (except for the AR of Crimea), 2038 people were personally interviewed. The sample was stochastic, 4-staged, and is representative of the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

In Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts, polls were conducted only in the territories controlled by Ukraine.

The statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0.95 and for design-effect of 1.5) does not exceed: 3.3% for indicators close to 50%, 2.8% - for indicators close to 25%, 2.0% - for indicators close to 10%, 1.4% - for indicators close to 5%.

To track the dynamics of support for political leaders and parties in comparison to the last presidential and parliamentary elections, respondents were asked to answer the question about which candidate and party they would vote for if the elections were held in February 2020. At the same time, to compare the ratings properly, respondents were offered the same list of candidates and parties that participated in the presidential and parliamentary elections (see Appendix 1 for a complete list of candidates and parties that were proposed to the respondent).

Electoral intentions of the population on the election of the President of Ukraine

Table 1 provides a comparison of the current presidential candidates` ratings with the results of the first round of the presidential election of 2019. Table 1 calculates a rating among all respondents (rating 1) and a rating among those who are about to vote and have decided with the choice (rating 2). Usually, the number of respondents who say that they "would spoil the ballot" is bigger than the number of those who actually do this in the elections. To a large extent, this is due to the fact that respondents who claim that they are going to spoil the ballot do not, as a result, go to the voting. Therefore, the modeling of a rating 2 has been carried out on the assumption that the % of those who "spoils the ballot" will be the same as in the first round of the elections in 2019.

The election results should be compared to rating 2. As you can see, the highest support among the population, for now, has V.Zelenskyi - 44.2% of those who have decided with their choice and are ready to vote (+14% compared to 2019). The second and third places are shared by Y.Boiko (13.1%, +1.4% compared to 2019) and P.Poroshenko (11.6%, -4.3% compared to 2019).

Electoral intentions of the population regarding elections to the Verkhovna Rada

Table 2 provides a comparison of the current party ratings in the Verkhovna Rada elections with the results of the parliamentary elections of 2019. The results of the parliamentary elections are calculated without taking into account invalid ballots, so additional assumptions for the calculation of rating 2 were not applied in this case.

If the elections were to take place in February 2020, “Sluha narodu (Servant of the People)” (39.1% of those who are going to vote and have decided with the choice, -4.1% compared to 2019), “Opozytsiina platforma – Za jyttia (Opposition Platform - For Life)” (15.6%, +2.5% compared to 2019), "Europeiska solidarnist (European Solidarity)" (10.8%, +2.7% compared to 2019), All-Ukrainian union "Batkivshchyna (Motherland)" (9%, +0.8% compared to 2019). The parties “Syla I Chest (Strength and Dignity)” (4.6%, + 0.8% compared to 2019) and the Radical Party (4.2%,+0.2% compared to 2019) are also close to the entering barrier.
