The project directed at creation of the Databank of sociological information became especially relevant for Ukraine in the late 90th. This was on the first place connected with the necessity to systemize and catalogue the data of considerable number of surveys, which were accumulated during the 90th, when empirical sociological surveys were frequently conducted. Open Databank of sociological data was initiated by Kiev International Institute of Sociology, a private sociological research institution founded in the first years of Ukrainian independence (in 1991 -1992). Work on Databank creation was started in 2001 jointly by Kiev International Institute of Sociology, Center "Social Indicators" and National University "Kiev-Mohyla Academy" with the support of Canadian Cooperation Fund.

The Databank was created with the goal of registration, preservation and insuring access for the general public to the data of sociological surveys of Ukrainian society collected by Kiev International Institute of Sociology and other research institutions.

Setting up open Databank of sociological information creates additional opportunities for distributing results of sociological surveys of public attitudes, intensifying the links among various research institutions and integrating Ukraine into the world community. Apart from exclusively scientific purposes, the Databank permits to monitor the data with regard to social situation and to supply the information to governmental and non-governmental organizations, which influences the process of making political decisions, citizens interested in obtaining certain information, political leaders and journalists.

• Studying the standards and methods of preservation and cataloguing of the data of sociological research, their adaptation and application. Introducing the software that will allow accessing the information оn-line.
• Building infrastructure and preparing materials for conducting major research (both conducting repeated analysis and designing new studies). This will stimulate the increase of the general level of research through competent use of data of sociological surveys, necessary for scientific studies. Thematic selection of data for raising the quality of subsequent and repeated surveys of Ukrainian society.
• Contributing to understanding of the situation in Ukrainian society by scientific workers and practitioners. Spreading the information about conclusions and results of the conducted surveys among politicians, mass media, officials, public associations with the purpose of contribution to increase of quality of social policy.
• " Co-operation with national archives of other countries for experience exchange, exchanging data, conducting comparative research. For today Databank of Social Data is a part of East European Data Archives Network (EDAN).
