Kyiv International Institute of Sociology sadly announces that on October 30, 2021, at the age of 82, a prominent Ukrainian sociologist, founder and president of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, founder of the Department of Sociology of the National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" Valerii Khmelko passed away. KIIS employees express their sincere condolences to his family.

Valerii Khmelko (July 30, 1939 - October 30, 2021) - President of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, Specialist in Macrosociology, Sociology of Personality, Electoral Sociology. He graduated from the Physics (1961) and Philosophy (1971) faculties and postgraduate studies (1974) of T. Shevchenko Kyiv State University. From 1992 to 2009 he was the founder and Head of the Department of Sociology, then Dean of the Faculty, then again Head of the Department and Professor of the National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy", from 1992 to present Co-founder and President of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology. In 1993 and 1996 he was a visiting professor at Hopkins University (USA). Since 1971 he has been a member of the Sociological Association of Ukraine, in 1990–1992 he was its vice-president, and since 1988 he has been a member of the International Sociological Association. In different years he was a member of the editorial board of various Soviet and Ukrainian sociological journals, as well as a member of the editorial board of the journal of the International Sociological Association The International Journal of Sociology.
