Which mobile applications are the most popular?

Press release prepared by KIIS Project Manager Oleksandr Bevziuk-Voloshyn

During February 5-7, 2021, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted its own all-Ukrainian public opinion poll "Omnibus". By the method of computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) based on a random sample of mobile telephone numbers 2005 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine were interview (except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea). The sample is representative for the adult population (18 years and older) of Ukraine. The sample does not include territories that are temporarily not controlled by the authorities of Ukraine - the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In Luhansk and Donetsk regions, the survey was conducted only in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.

Statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) does not exceed: 2.4% for indicators close to 50%, 2.1% for indicators close to 25%, 1.5% - for indicators close to 10%, 1.1% - for indicators close to 5%.

According to the latest face-to-face interview before the Covid 19 epidemic in Ukraine (these data are the most reliable) conducted by KIIS in February 2020, 95% of the population of Ukraine aged 18+ have mobile phones (96% of urban and 92% of rural residents).

Table 1 shows the popularity of different messaging channels from a mobile phone. The most common mean of communication is Viber, which is used by 66% of respondents. The second most popular is Facebook Messenger - 35%. In third or fourth place are Telegram (used by 24% of respondents) and WhatsApp (21%). Not very popular messaging channel was Twitter, the capabilities of which are used for such purposes by only 6% of respondents. However, almost a third of Ukrainians (27%) do not exchange messages from a mobile phone in any of the above applications.

Conditional rating of the use of messaging capabilities is maintained in terms of gender (Table 2). Slightly more women than men use Facebook Messenger - 39% and 30% respectively (the difference is significant at the level of 0,01).

In terms of age groups, Viber retains the lead in use in each of the categories (Table 3). It is worth noting the age category of 18-29 years, where the second most popular (unlike others) is the Telegram. The share of respondents who do not use any of these applications is the lowest among the age group 18-29 years (5%) and increases with age: 30-39 years - 11%, 40-49 years - 13.5%, 50-59 years - 25%, 60-69 years - 51%, 70 years and older – 76%.

Depending on the type of settlement (urban and rural population), the popularity of applications coincides with the conditional rating in the country as a whole (Table 4). At the same time, the possibilities of Telegram and WhatsApp are used a little more by the urban population. Telegram - 28% among the urban population and 16% among the rural population (the difference is significant at the level of 0.01). WhatsApp - 25% among urban population and 12% among rural (the difference is significant at the level of 0.01). Among the rural population a higher level than among the urban population of those respondents who do not use any of these applications - 37% and 23% respectively.
