How Ukrainians will celebrate Easter in a pandemic?

The press release was prepared by KIIS PR Manager Tetiana Piaskovska

During April 13-15, 2021, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted an all-Ukrainian public opinion poll. By the method of computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) on the basis of a random sample of mobile telephone numbers 2001 respondents were interviewed living in all regions of Ukraine (except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea). The sample is representative for the adult population (18 years and older) of Ukraine. The sample does not include territories that are temporarily not controlled by the authorities of Ukraine - the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, some districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In Luhansk and Donetsk regions, the survey was conducted only in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.

Statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) does not exceed 2,4% .

Comment of KIIS Director General V. Paniotto.

According to the research, almost 20% of the adult population (approximately 6 million people) plan to go to church on Easter. We remind you that in Ukraine more than 40,000 people have already died from Covid, the number of those who fell ill in April alone is about 380,000, more than 400 people die from Covid every day. Clustering large numbers of people increases the likelihood of getting sick and can lead to a new wave of disease. We urge everyone to be careful and follow all the recommendations of doctors.

In this study, we asked respondents the question “Will you celebrate Easter on May 2? If so, how exactly?”

92% of the population somehow plan to celebrate Easter, only 6% will not celebrate (and 2% are undecided).

Among the entire adult population of Ukraine, one in five (19%) plans to go to church on Easter, and 9% - to take part in the all-night service.

The majority of the population of Ukraine does not plan to go to church on Easter. 69% of the population of Ukraine plan to cook Easter meals at home, 25% plan to pray in the family circle, and host guests relatives at home – 19%.

In addition, among the entire population of Ukraine:

  • Will go to the cemetery – 11%
  • Will visit within their city – 8%
  • Will visit outside their city – 5%
