Which mobile applications are the most popular?
The press release was prepared by KIIS Project Manager Olha Cheromukhina
During September 10-15, 2021, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted its own all-Ukrainian public opinion poll "Omnibus". By the method of computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers (with random generation of phone numbers and subsequent statistical weighing) were interviewed 2002 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine (except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea) . The sample is representative for the adult population (18 years and older) of Ukraine. The sample does not include territories that are temporarily not controlled by the authorities of Ukraine - the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In Luhansk and Donetsk regions, the survey was conducted only in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities. Statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) does not exceed: 2.4% for indicators close to 50%, 2.1% for indicators close to 25%, 1.5% - for indicators close to 10%, 1.1% - for indicators close to 5%.
The most common means of communication is Viber, which is used by 73.6% of respondents. The second most popular is Facebook Messenger - 42.7%. In third and fourth place are Telegram (used by 31.6% of respondents) and WhatsApp (25.3%). The least popular messaging channel is Signal, the capabilities of which are used for such purposes by only 3.8% of respondents. However, almost a third of Ukrainians (18.7%) do not exchange messages from a mobile phone in any of the above applications. The dynamics of the use of mobile applications shows that more began to use Viber (from 65.8% to 73.6%), Facebook Messenger (from 34.9% to 42.7%) and Telegram (24.2% to 31.6%) ). By gender distribution, slightly more men than women use Telegram (34.9 and 28.9%, respectively). In terms of age groups, Viber retains the lead in use in each of the categories. It is worth noting the age category of 18-29 years, where the second and third most popular (unlike others) is the Telegram (64.3%) and Instagram (61.0%). The share of respondents who do not use any of these applications is the lowest among the age group 18-29 years (1.4%) and increases with age: 30-39 years - 2.7%, 40-49 years - 9.7%, 50-59 years - 21.9%, 60-69 years - 32.9%, 70 years and older - 57.9%. Depending on the type of settlement (urban and rural population), the possibilities of Telegram and WhatsApp are used a little more by the urban population. Telegram - 37.1% among the urban population and 20.3% among the rural population. WhatsApp - 29.7% among the urban population and 16.3% among the rural population. Among the rural population a higher level than among the urban those respondents who do not use any of these applications - 24.7% and 15.8%, respectively.
