On the Ukrainian population feeling consequences of the economic crisis, February 2009

  FromFebruary 6 toFebruary 15, 2009, theKievInternationalInstituteofSociology (KIIS) conductedapan-Ukrainiansurvey interviewing 2,038 respondents residing in all the oblasts of Ukraine, Crimea and Kyiv, this random sample being representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 and older.

The statistical error of the sample (with 0.95 probability, design-effect equaling 1.5) does not exceed 3.3% in figures close to 50%, 2.8% in figures close to 25%, 2.0% in figures close to 10%, 1.4% in figures close to5%, 0.9% in figures close to2% and 0.6% in figures close to 1%.

The proportion of people who have not felt any crisis consequences is less than 7%, while the percentage of those who have felt the crisis is over 90%,namely

  • 80% of the population have felt it through rising prices and fees;
  • 44% have had lower income;
  • 14% have experienced delays in salary/pension payment;
  • 11% have lost their jobs.

It is worth noting that, though losing a job is not always classified as unemployment (according to the definition given by the International Association of Employment, not all people losing jobs are considered unemployed but only those who do not have any other income and have been seeking employment for the past 4 weeks), it has negative influence on one’s emotional state.

  • There are more men who have lost a job than women (14% compared to 9%);
  • People who have lost their jobs are the most numerous in the 18-29 age category (20%) and in the 40-49 age group (16%); as for the level of education, more job losers are found among people with secondary education (15%);
  • The most numerous among those who have suffered from growing prices and fees are elderly people aged 60-69 (86%) and those aged 70 and older (83%); as for the level of education, more people with secondary education (83%) and specialized secondary education (80%) have been affected.

Regional statistics:

  • Rising prices and fees affected 92% of people residing in the Eastern region, 84% of the Western region dwellers, 79% of those living in the Southern region, and 71% of the Central region residents.
  • The problem of lower income has been topical for 46% of people living in the Eastern region, 45% of those residing in the Western region, 43% of the Southern region dwellers, and 42% of the population of the Central region.
  • Delays in payment of salaries and pensions have affected 17% of the Eastern region dwellers, about 13% of people living in the Southern and Central regions, and 10% of those residing in the Western region.
  • Jobs were lost by nearly the same proportion of people in all the regions, that is 11.3% in the West, 10.8% in the Center, 11.4% in the South, and 11.2% in the East.
