How the Ukrainians are going to spend vacations

By Tatyana Piaskovskaya

On May 19-28, 2017 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted an all-Ukrainian public opinion poll. Data were collected from 2040 respondents living in 108 settlements (PSU) in all oblasts of Ukraine (except for the AR of Crimea) with the method of personal interviewing. The sample was stochastic and is representative of the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

In Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts survey was conducted only in the territories that are controlled by the Ukrainian government.

The statistical sampling error (with a probability of 0.95 and for a design effect of 1.5) does not exceed:

3.3% — for indexes close to 50%,

2.8% — for indexes close to 25%,

2.0% — for indexes close to 10%,

1.4% — for indexes close to 5%.

The study showed that as of the second half of May 2017, 59% of Ukrainians do not plan to have a rest. This number decreased compared with 2016 (it was 63%). The number of those who have no opportunity to travel somewhere is 22% (in 2016 it was 25%).

Also, it should be noted that by the percentage of those who plan to go on vacation we have reached the level of the "pre-war" 2013 year.

The visa-free regime has not made a significant impact on plans to have a rest abroad yet. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the study was conducted in May when the visa-free regime has not yet come into force in Ukraine, and the attitude to its introduction was somewhat skeptical.

Moreover:

✓     In the first place by popularity, as well as a year ago, is a rest in the Carpathians and other places of Ukraine (10%);

✓     In the second place there is a rest in dachas and country houses (8%);

✓     5% of respondents plan to visit relatives in the village;

✓     A number of those who plan to go on vacation abroad is 3%;

✓     As it was in 2016, 1% of respondents plan to go to Crimea;

✓     14% of respondents have not decided on where to spend vacation yet

By gender:

✓     40% of women and 35% of men plan to stay at home on vacation;

✓     The number of those who plan to visit the Carpathians is higher among men (12%) than among women (8%);

✓     The number of those who plan to travel abroad is twice bigger among men (4%) than among women (2%).

Other significant differences were not detected.

By age:

✓     The older the age, the greater the number of those who plan to spend vacation at home (18-29 years old - 27%, 60-69 years old - 46%), the same tendency is observed with the opportunities to go somewhere - the older the age, the higher the number of those who do not have opportunities to go somewhere (18-29 years old - 17%, 60-69 years - 27%).

✓     Vacation in Crimea or abroad are more popular options for the youngest age group 18-29 (3% and 6%, respectively)

✓     Among those who plan to visit the Carpathians there are more people of the age groups 30-39 years old and 40-49 years (17% and 15%, respectively), also there is a big percentage of young people aged 18-29 - 13%

✓     Among those who plan to spend vacations in dacha or countryside, there are more people of middle and upper-middle-aged people (9-10%) than the young ones (4%).

By the level of education:

✓     The greatest number of those who do not plan to go have a rest is for people with an elementary education (85%), the least - with higher education (42%).

✓     The greatest number of those who plan to go somewhere inside the country is concentrated among people with secondary special and higher education: to visit relatives in the countryside:11% - people with secondary school education, 9% - with higher; to the Carpathians and other places in Ukraine: 17% - with higher education, 8% - with secondary special.

✓     The greatest number of those who plan to travel abroad is among people with elementary (4%) and higher (7%) education.

By the level of financial well-being:

✓     The number of those who will not go on vacation is in inverse ratio to the level of financial well-being: the lower the income, the more of those who will not have a rest and otherwise (see graph)

✓     The number of those who plan to go abroad is bigger among those who can afford to buy expensive things (17%)

By the place of living:

✓     The biggest differences in the type of vacation chosen are observed for people who live in different settlements: among those who live in the village 78% do not plan to go somewhere on vacation, while among those who live in cities 50% chose this option.

✓     The villagers mostly do not plan visits to countryside houses, dachas or villages (1%), vice versa inhabitants of cities do plan: 11% - to dachas, 8% - to the village.

✓     The number of those who plan to visit the Carpathians and other places in Ukraine is twice bigger among those who live in cities (12%) compared to the villagers (6%).

✓     The same situation is for going abroad: 4% - inhabitants of cities, 2% - villagers.
