Monitoring of feeling of happiness in Ukraine

According to the research conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in the period from 2001 to 2012. All the studies were conducted by the same method. The sample for these researches is representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 years and older. The study of 2012 was held in the period of February 10–19; 2029 respondents were interviewed.

The survey was conducted in 110 locations (PSU) in all regions of Ukraine and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea by means of personal interview at the residence of the respondent. About 2,000 respondents were interviewed each year. Sampling error does not exceed 2.2%.

DYNAMICS OF ESTIMATES OF HAPPINESS

The survey revealed that the feeling of happiness has significantly reduced during the 2011–2012 years. Thus, 63% of respondents considered themselves to be happy in 2011, and only 53% felt the same in 2012.

The level of happiness is associated with the level of financial position: the better the financial situation is, the happier person feels himself. Thus, the February survey showed only 10% happy people among those who do not have enough money for food (poor), 34% happy people among those who can afford to buy almost everything (income above average).

By sex and age

In general, young people are much happier than older ones, while men on average are slightly happier than women.

Part of men who consider themselves to be happy reaches 54% and the same part among women constitutes only 51%, as we can see from the results of the survey conducted in 2012.

With increase of age the level of happiness decreases; representatives of youth aged 18–29 years (68%) are the happiest ones; the happiness level constitutes 60% among the age group 30–39 years; 50% happiness is the rate common for the age groups 40–49 and 50–59; only 42% of respondents aged 60–69 consider themselves to be happy. The lowest level of happiness is observed among elderly people and makes up only 35%.

By level of education

One of the factors which affect the level of happiness is education. The survey showed that people with higher levels of education, have higher level of happiness. For example, among people with incomplete secondary education level of happiness is 40%; among people with secondary education it constitutes 49%, among people with vocational secondary education it makes up 51% and among people with higher education this percentage is 61%.
