The surge of optimism in Ukraine with the world`s gradual loss of optimistic sentiment on the background

With some fluctuations, humanity gradually loses optimism. 37% of the population of the planet is hoping for a better off the upcoming year. A little less, 31% expect no change, and a quarter - 25% - remain pessimistic, believing it will become worse. Thus, the optimism index that is calculated by subtracting the number of pessimistic people from the number of optimistic people, was 12 pp in 2019, while in 2018 it averaged 13 pp. Whereas in Ukraine, compared to 2018, there was a significant increase in optimistic sentiment in 2019, and the index valued 25 pp. against 4pp. in 2018. In general, Ukraine took 15th place among 46 countries by the level of optimism of its inhabitants.

These are data from an international study conducted by Gallup International, the association of independent polling agencies. In Ukraine, the research has been conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) for the fifth year in a row.

Готовність українців до участі в акціях соціального протесту, грудень 2019

За даними опитувань, проведених Київським міжнародним інститутом соціології, в цілому, готовність до протестів за останній рік не змінилася. Частка тих, хто стверджує, що НЕ готові брати участь у будь-яких акціях масового протесту протягом 2018-2019 рр. не змінилась і складає 49%.

У грудні 2019 року в акціях протесту готові брати участь 48% дорослих жителів України. Рівень зріс порівняно з 2018 роком (44%). Порівняно із попередніми роками рівень готовності до участі в акціях соціального протесту спочатку зріс із 43% у грудні 2014 року до 49% у грудні 2016 року, а потім знизився до 40% у грудні 2017 року, і в останні 2 роки зростає (44% у 2018 та 48% у 2019 р.). Але, як бачимо з останньої таблиці у додатку, це зростання пов’язано переважно зі зростанням готовності прийняти участь у виборах.

Стресові ситуації в житті українців, 2019

Згідно з дослідженням КМІС, 50% опитаних протягом 2019 року пережили якусь стресову ситуацію. Порівняно з 2018 роком їх кількість суттєво не змінилася (у 2018-му таких було 52%). Спостерігається збільшення частки респондентів, які пережили важку хворобу близьких, порівняно з 2018 роком (13 відсоткових пунктів у 2019 р. проти 9 у 2018 р.), а також зросла частка тих, хто сам пережив важку хворобу чи операцію, порівняно з попередніми роками вимірювань (2013-2018 рр.). Водночас, порівняно з попередніми роками вимірювань у 2019-му значуще зменшилась частка тих, кому довелось опинитися без засобів до існування, відчувати свою безпорадність, втратити вiру у власні сили або переживати інші (не зазначені в анкеті) стресові ситуації.

Attitudes of the Ukrainians to the gambling legalization: December 2019

According to the survey, 62% of respondents know that in the parliament simultaneously there are several draft laws on the legalization of gambling.

At the same time, to the question "Do you support the legalization of the gaming industry?", 56% said they did not support it at all. Another 19% of respondents support the legalization of gambling but only if the special gaming zones or localized sites will be designated for this purpose. Also, 18% of respondents fully support the legalization of gambling.

Assessment of the work of authorities and reaction to current events

Nearly half of those polled (45%) said their utility bills in October 2019 had increased compared to October 2018. Also, 35% of respondents reported that these costs had not changed or had decreased.

By the end of November, 52% of those polled had a positive attitude to Volodymyr Zelenskyi, 19% hold a negative attitude. During the fall, the share of those who favor Zelenskyi has decreased: it was 73% in September, 66% in October, 64% in early November, and 52% in late November. The share of those who take Zelenskyi negatively has increased during the autumn: it was 7% in September, 9% in October, 12% in early November, 19% at the end of November.
