Public thoughts on political parties orientations: oppositional and governing

Kyiv International Institute of Sociology conducted their own investigation during the period February 8-17, 2013.

2032 respondents were interviewed; the investigation covered all regions of Ukraine, including Kiev and Crimea Region; the sample was random and is deemed to be representative for population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

Statistical sample deviation (with probability of 0.95 and design-effect of 1.5) does not exceed:

3.3% for index close to 50%,
 2,8% — for index close to 25%,
 2,0% — for index close to 10%,
 1,4% — for index close to 5%.

Respondents were presented the following task: “Below you are welcome to find the list of parties which obtained more than 1% of votes during the elections on October 28, 2012. Which ones, in your opinion, support the government, which the opposition, and which do not support anyone?”

The survey showed that following parties are considered to be ones that rule (ie these are the parties, which are believed to support the existing government. Not opposition):

  • Party of Regions - 90%

  • Communist Party of Ukraine - 34% (only 10% consider this party to be oppositional)

  • Party of N. Korolevska "Ukraine, go ahead!" - 32% (but 13% believe this one to be oppositional).

Ukrainians believe following parties to be oppositional:

  • Batkivschyna (Homeland) - 88%

  • Svoboda (Freedom) - 78%

  • UDAR (Stroke) - 76%

It was difficult for respondents to identify the orientation of following parties:

Radical Party of Oleg Lyashko - 70% of respondents could not answer the question (34% of them believe that the party does not support any government or opposition, while for 36% of respondents it was difficult to determine their position)

Our Ukraine 59% of respondents (31% of them said that the party does not support any government or opposition, and for 28% it was difficult to determine)

Communist Party of Ukraine - 56% (of which 34% said that the party does not support any government or opposition, while for 22% it was difficult to determine)

Party of N.Korolevska "Ukraine, go ahead!" - 55% (of which 25% said that the party does not support any government or opposition, while 30% could not determine their position)

As of regional distribution:

Among the inhabitants of Western and Central regions (combined) 89% believe that Party of Regions supports government; also ruling parties are Communist Party (42%), Party of N.Korolevska "Ukraine, go ahead!" (40%). Following parties are considered to be oppositional: Batkivschyna (Homeland, 87%) , Svoboda (Freedom, 79%), UDAR (Stroke, 75%), Our Ukraine (28%) and Radical Party of O.Lyashko (27%).

Among the inhabitants of the Eastern and Southern regions (combined) 92% said Party of Regions was pro-governmental, 26% - Communist Party of Ukraine, 22% - Party of N.Korolevska "Ukraine, go ahead!". Following parties are considered to be oppositional: Batkivschyna (Homeland, 88%), UDAR (Stroke, 77%), Svoboda (Freedom, 76%), Our Ukraine (43%), and the Radical Party of O.Lyashkj (28%).

It should be noted that some parties are perceived differently depending on the region.

Thus, for example the party "Our Ukraine" is slightly more considered to be oppositional in the Southern and Eastern regions (43%) than in Western and Central (28%) areas. Communist Party of Ukraine is also slightly more deemed to be oppositional in the Southern and Eastern regions (13%) if compared to Western and Central (7%) areas. So the same situation is with Party of N.Korolevska "Ukraine, go ahead!" - 10% in the Western and Central regions, and 17% - in the Southern and Eastern regions.

The same different perception we have with parties which are considered to support the existing government - party "Ukraine, go ahead!" is considered to be pro-governmental by 40% of respondents in the Western and Central regions, and only by 22% - in the Southern and Eastern regions; the Communist Party – by 42% in the Western and Central regions and by 26% - in the Southern and Eastern regions, party "Our Ukraine" – by 9% in the Western and Central regions, and by 1% - in the Southern and Eastern regions.

Percentage of respondents who believe that these parties support the existing government (in blue) and opposition (in orange)

The graph shows that only 4 parties - Party of Regions, Batkivschyna (Homeland), Svoboda (Freedom) and UDAR (Stroke) – are easy to determine their political orientation. Other parties cause difficulties for respondents in understanding of their positioning in the political sphere, what is depicted in their total percentage which barely reaches 50%.

“Below you are welcome to find the list of parties which obtained more than 1% of votes during the elections on October 28, 2012. Which ones, in your opinion, support the government, which the opposition, and which do not support anyone?”
