How Ukrainians are going to spend the vacations

Press release by Tatyana Piaskovskaya

On 19 – 31 of May, 2016 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted all-Ukrainian public opinion poll. Sample consisted of 2014 respondents living in 108 settlements in all regions (oblasts) of Ukraine (except for the AR of Crimea). Sample was stochastic and representative for the population of Ukraine aged 18 and above.

In Luhansk and Donetsk regions survey was conducted only on the territories controlled by Ukraine.

Statistic sample error (with probability 0.95 and design-effect of 1.5) does not exceed:

3.3% — for indicators close to 50%,

2.8% — for indicators close to 25%,

2.0% — for indicators close to 10%,

1.4% — for indicators close to 5%.

Survey has showed that as of mid-May, 2016 63% of the Ukrainians do not plan to have vacation. This share has decreased comparing to the results of the similar survey in 2015 (it was 68% then). The share of those who do not have an opportunity to go somewhere for vacation is 25%.

Moreover:

  • Rest in dachas, country houses and in the Carpathians is on the first place like it was a year ago (9% and 8% respectively);

  • 5% of the surveyed plan to visit relatives in the village;

  • The share of those who plan to have a rest abroad is 2%;

  • As it was in 2015, 1% of the respondents plan to go to Crimea;

  • 12% of the respondents have not decided on where to spend vacation yet.

Distribution by regions:

  • The biggest amount of those who do not plan to have a summer vacation this year is in Western region (73%), the smallest – in Central region (58%). As to respondents from Southern and Eastern regions these shares are 64% and 60% respectively.

  • Traveling to the Carpathians and other places within Ukraine is on agenda mostly for people from Western (9%) and Central (8%) regions. Also, this kind of vacation is desirable for 6% of people in South region and 6% for people in Eastern region.

  • Rest in the countryside and dacha is the most popular in Eastern region (16%, was 6% a year ago), the least popular – in Western region (4%). In Central and South regions the shares are 11% and 8% respectively.

  • There are no considerable regional differences for the option “will visit relatives in the village”: 5% in Central, South and Eastern regions, 4% - in Western region.

  • The biggest amount of those who plan to go to Crimea for vacation is concentrated in South and Central regions (2%), only 1% of respondents chose this option in Eastern region, and 0% - in Western one.

  • The biggest amount of those who are going to travel abroad is concentrated in Western region (3%), the smallest – in Eastern region (0.4%). There are 2% of such people in Central and in South regions.

Commentary of V. Paniotto, CEO of KIIS, professor of NaUKMA

The dynamics shown on the chart is partly explained by the fact that the population of Crimea was polled before 2014 but it did not participate in later polls in 2014-16. Moreover, the population living in the territories of Donbass that are not controlled by Ukraine participated in the polls in 2014 and 2015, but in 2016 we interviewed only those who live in areas controlled by Ukraine. But both notes explain only 1-2% of changes. Therefore we can say that the smallest amount of people who planned to rest outside the home was observed in May 2014 (17%). Perhaps that was due to uncertainty and instability in the country. Now the number of those who plan to rest outside the home returned to "pre-war" level (25%).
