Opinion of the Ukrainian population about reasons blocking the opposition Ukrainian Parliament's session

From February 8 to February 13, 2008 the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted All–Ukrainian poll. 2036 respondents at the age of 18 years and older living in all regions of Ukraine, Crimea and Kiev according to statistical selection were surveyed by the method of interview.

The statistical error of selection (with probability 0.95 and at design–effect 1.5) doesn't exceed the following: 3.5% for indicators which are close to 50%, 3,0% – for indicators which are close to 25%, 2,0% – for indicators which are close to 10%.

  • 34% of respondents said that main reason for blocking the opposition Ukrainian Parliament's session is the struggle for power. Half (17%) – expressed their disagreement with the signing the letter of Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament about accession of Ukraine to the Plan of action concerning membership of Ukraine in NATO

  • 14% of respondents believe that blocking the meetings of the Ukrainian Parliament's session by Party of Regions and the Communist Party due to the protection of the interests of their voters, while 11% – an attempt to disrupt the work of Parliament, 8% – the desire to increase their popularity.

  • 3% suppose that the main reason for such action of the opposition is demanding the resignation of Lutsenko from the Minister of Internal Affairs.

  • 12% of respondents are undecided

  • A relative majority of respondents in the West (49%), in the center (37%) and the South (30%) suppose that the main reason for blocking of the Ukrainian Parliament's session by Party of Regions and the Communist Party is the race for power. Only in the East (39%) there is the prevailing view that the actions of the opposition caused by disagreement with the signing of the letter by the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament about accession of Ukraine to the Plan of action concerning membership of Ukraine in NATO

  • Assessing which of the latest developments directly affect them or their families, only 23% of respondents pointed recent events in the Ukrainian Parliament among other. 28% of the population of the East, 24% – of the South, 23% – of the Center and 18% – of the West support this opinion.
